DAILY REPORTS
Select from the following diary entries from our budding adventurers:
11 FEB
Nimrod goes south
Nevis was a sheer delight. The anchorage, which can be rolly, was flat
calm and we decided to spend a rest day here. Most of the crew hired a
taxi for the day and went off to explore this gem of Caribbean paradise.
Sidney the taxi driver was reasonably priced, highly entertaining and
very informative, taking us to a lovely converted plantation house for
lunch.
In the evening we feasted on Creole food at the Sunshine Bar, right on
the edge of the beach under a star-filled sky, and prayed for the wind
gods to be kind to us for our east-bound trip back to Antigua the
following day.
It didn't work. During the night the wind increased and veered to ESE,
exactly our course for Antigua. As we left just after dawn, there was no
alternative but to motorsail the whole way with a 3-reefed main and the
"iron headsail" giving us reasonable progress. This became the toughest
leg of our cruise, with frequent squalls and quite hard motoring, but
with a few crew leaving and one joining in Antigua we had to grit our
teeth and get on with it, arriving tired but relieved at Falmouth
harbour at sunset.
Saturday was changeover day - Peter, Heather and Jan departing to rejoin
the English winter, and Carol from Dublin joining us for the next two
weeks. It was a busy day - restocking, washing and tidying the yacht,
much bureaucracy with the Antiguan authorities as usual (the British
taught them bureaucracy but they perfected it into an art-form), and
generally getting ready to head south to the windward islands.
Guadeloupe from Antigua is 45nm of open sea sailing, almost due south.
For the first time in weeks we had a truly favourable wind and raced
down at an average speed of 8.6kts, anchoring in Deshaies on the NW tip
of Guadeloupe in time for lunch and a relaxing afternoon. On Monday
morning we received emails on board from our recently departed guests,
describing life back home while we had a glorious smooth but quick sail
down the lee side of Guadeloupe and across to the Isles des Saintes, a
group of tiny picturesque French islands with a lovely calm anchorage
and great snorkelling.
Tomorrow we have another rest day to explore and enjoy yet another
Caribbean paradise... Its a tough life, but someone's got to do it.
