HOW ABOUT BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THE YACHT? GET YOUR RYA DAY SKIPPER QUALIFICATION
This course enables you to take responsibility for the yacht and the crew. These responsibilities include boat handling, sail handling and selection, weather forecasting, victualling, engine maintenance, passage planning, watch keeping, navigating and pilotage. The course also includes an introduction to night sailing.
COURSE OPTIONS
All year round – • 9 Day Combined - Theory in Dartmouth classroom (Sat 9:30am - Tue 5:30pm) - Practical course (Tue 5:30pm - Sun 3:00pm) • 7 Day Practical Course (Sun 5:30pm - Sun 3:00pm) • 5 Day Practical Course (Sun 5:30pm - Fri 3:00pm) • 3 Practical weekends (Fri 5:30pm - Sun 3:00pm)
PRACTICAL DAY SKIPPER COURSE
As the title suggests this course covers all the practical elements in the Day Skipper course, but you will need to do the shorebased theory course separately. We suggest you do the shorebased theory course before the practical element of the course. You will live aboard the yacht and visit a number of the stunning harbours and creeks that the Devon and Cornwall Coastline has to offer, giving you many opportunities to perfect your pilotage and anchorage skill.
NINE DAY COMBINED RYA DAY SKIPPER COURSE
This course enables you to do the theory and practical Day Skipper Course in one hit. The benefit being that by the end of the nine days you will have the necessary skills to take responsibility for the complete safety and well-being of a yacht and its crew. The theory course runs over the first four days in our classroom in the heart of Dartmouth. During these four days accommodation is not provided therefore you will need to book a B&B / hotel. However, subject to availability you are welcome to stay on board one of our yachts (free of charge). The remaining five days will be spent at sea on the practical side of the course.
SUGGESTED PRE COURSE EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
Generally we find this course can be the most demanding of the RYA qualifications, as the leap from Competent Crew to Day Skipper is a large one. We do advise students take every opportunity to sail prior to moving onto the practical Day Skipper Course; our Revision Courses and Mile Builder courses are ideal for improving skills.
AND WHEN I FINISH?
You will be confident to skipper a cruising yacht on short passages by day.
