BROADEN YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH OUR INTENSIVE THEORY COURSES
From our classroom in Dartmouth we offer a full range of RYA shorebased courses.
RYA DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED COURSE
This course gives a basic introduction to navigation and meteorology. On completion of the course you will have enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day.
RYA COASTAL SKIPPER/YACHTMASTER SHOREBASED COURSE
This course covers navigation, meteorology, collision avoidance, safety and passage planning. On completion of the course you will understand the principles of navigating for coastal and offshore passages. To achieve RYA Yachtmaster staus you need to pass this shorebased theory qualification.
RYA FIRST AID AT SEA
This one day course covers First aid and resusitation techniques for yachtsmen, including how to treat hypothermia. This certificate is valid for three years and is a prerequisite for your Yachtmaster Offshore Exam.
RYA MARINE RADIO SHORT RANGE CERTIFICATE
This one day course (and exam) allows you to operate a VHF radio (fitted with Digital Selective Calling) on board any British vessel. During the course you will learn the Global Maritime Distress System (G.M.D.S.S.) and routine, distress, urgency, medical and safety procedures. The course finishes with a short exam, so please bring along a cheque of £22 (made payable to the RYA) and a passport sized photo.
This certificate is a prerequisite for your Yachtmaster Offshore Exam.
RYA DIESEL ENGINE MAINTENANCE COURSE
Leaving this one day course you will have an awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine and be able to take simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea. Mechanical failure is the main reason for lifeboat callouts for yachts.
RYA BASIS SEA SURVIVAL CERTIFICATE
This one day sea survival course will teach you the essentials of basic sea survival techniques and most importantly how to get the best use out of a life raft after abandonment. The course contains preparation for abandonment, actions after abandonment, design of lifejackets and life rafts, medical issues such as hyperthermia, search and rescue techniques and maintenance of equipment. It includes a practical session in a swimming pool to experience entering a life raft and righting a capsized raft whilst fully kitted out. NONSTOP Sail will provide the foul weather gear, the life raft and life jackets.
No previous experience or assumed knowledge is required.
YACHT RIGGING AND MAINTENANCE COURSE
NONSTOP Sail is very fortunate to be able to offer this course alongside Barry Hollis Rigging Solutions. This one day course covers: • Types of rigs and their merits. • Stepping masts and tuning the standing rigging. • Identifying the various types of wire rope, their applications and methods of terminations. • Maintaining the components that make up the rig. • Understanding of the compatibility of different metals in the marine environment and the effect of fatigue. • Splicing of 3-strand line and braiding on braid line. • Discussing the principals of ' rig checks', to keep the mast and it's components in a seaworthy condition. • Discussing operating safely when going aloft at sea or in harbour.
